How to declare pre-existing conditions with AllClear

While we are developing an initial quote for your Travel Insurance, you will be asked to take reasonable care to ensure you declare any pre-existing medical conditions you may be living with, including mental health conditions.

If you are declaring other health conditions during the screening as well, we may ask you questions such as:

  • How old were you when you were diagnosed?
  • Are you undergoing treatment at the moment, or do you have treatment planned?
  • Have you had any unexpected hospital admissions?
  • Have you had any surgery or outpatient/inpatient treatment?
  • Have you had any referrals or investigations?

We may also ask more specific questions related to your mental health diagnosis. Please answer these questions to the best of your ability to ensure your policy remains valid.

Do you always need to declare your mental illness?

To make sure you have the most comprehensive cover possible, all pre-existing conditions, including your mental health diagnosis, need to be declared. Your cover may be invalidated otherwise.

How much is Travel Insurance for mental health conditions?

The cost of Travel Insurance for mental healthconditions can vary depending on the following factors:

  • The exact diagnosis of your mental health: The specific mental health conditions you are living with can affect the total cost of your Travel Insurance.
  • Other pre-existing health conditions: If you are living with other medical conditions in addition to a mental health diagnosis, these conditions can also affect the cost of your premium.
  • How long your trip is: The longer your trip is, the higher the final cost of your policy may be. This is because more time away increases the chance that an incident may occur.
  • Where you are going: Certain destinations are riskier to travel to than others. The cost of your policy may be affected because of this.
  • Any additional cover: If you have added sports cover, cruise cover or other insurance policies, that will increase the final price of your Travel Insurance.

Travelling companion cancellation cover

We offer cancellation cover for you and any family, friends or carers travelling with you. If you're unable to depart or need to return home early due to circumstances related to your disability, we may also cover your companion’s associated expenses.

Our cover includes:

  • Cover for deposits lost on unused flights, accommodation, or pre-booked excursions.
  • Cover for the unused portion of the trip if your companion needs to cut their journey short due to a medical situation affecting you.

Tips for travelling with a mental health condition

A fun, safe trip overseas is made easier with the right preparation. This allows you to effectively manage your conditions while enjoying your holiday to the fullest. Here are some tips to make sure you stay well and have a good time overseas:

  • Travel Insurance: Purchasing Travel Insurance can help you avoid stress while you are overseas. Just be sure to look over your policy, so you know what you are covered for and follow all the relevant conditions.
  • Consult your doctor: Book an appointment with your doctor to make sure you are fit to fly before you leave. You should also check that your medications are legal where you are going, and look at alternatives if they are not.
  • Consult your therapist: Be sure to check in with your therapist or other mental health professional before travelling. Ask for tips on how to manage your mental health while you are travelling.
  • Understand entry requirements: Be sure you have the proper visa and other travel documents you will need to enter the country you are visiting. By looking these details up ahead of time, you can feel more prepared on the day.
  • Travel with companions: Depending on your condition, you may want to travel with family, friends or a carer to help you feel safer and more comfortable on your trip.
  • Avoid crowds and triggers: If you live with anxiety or struggle to manage high levels of stimulation, it may be a good idea to avoid crowded spaces. Consider looking up less busy times for major attractions or finding calmer activities.

These are only our recommendations, if you are concerned before travelling you should seek the advice of a medical expert.
