Travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions while visiting Bali

If you require overseas emergency medical treatment, your costs can add up quickly. It's important to have the right cover for any pre-existing medical conditions you live with.

AllClear offers cover for over 1,300 pre-existing medical conditions, meaning you can get the cover you need for your dream holiday. Declaring the conditions is easy thanks to our straightforward screening process, online or over the phone.

Some major conditions we cover include:

Get covered for your Bali adventure

When travelling through Bali and Indonesia, you probably have a few exciting outdoor activities on your bucket list. Whether you're snorkelling in the coral gardens of Amed or hiking Mount Batur, comprehensive Travel Insurance helps to ensure you can enjoy yourself without facing financial hardship if things go wrong.

AllClear can offer cover for personal injuries you might sustain while taking part in these outdoor activities (providing you comply with your policy conditions).

We can offer financial cover for other aspects of your outdoor activities, too. For example, if you're planning to visit one of Bali's world-famous golf courses, we can cover theft and damage to your equipment.

Our policy can also cover your rental car insurance excess amount (subject to the appropriate additional premium being paid and shown on your Policy) if your rental car is involved in a motor vehicle accident while you are driving or is damaged or stolen while in your care.

Riding mopeds, motorcycles and scooters in Bali

Hiring another vehicle in Bali, like a moped, motorcycle or scooter? This classic Bali experience could end in disaster if you aren't properly covered for medical costs.

AllClear may also be able to offer cover if you're injured while riding one of these vehicles. That means you can set out on the streets of Bali without the fear of facing unexpected medical costs.

Note that a number of general exclusions apply in relation to vehicles like these. For example, you won't be covered for accidents occurring on a vehicle with an engine capacity in excess of 125cc, if you fail to wear a crash helmet, if you don't have an appropriate licence or if you aren't insured under a motor insurance policy.

Avoid a holiday nightmare by securing Travel Insurance before riding any rental vehicle. Make sure that you always stick to the rules of your Travel Insurance when riding a vehicle.

Cover for medical emergency expenses in Bali and Indonesia

Choose AllClear for your emergency medical cover in Bali and Indonesia. We offer cover for medical treatment you might need in Indonesia, resulting from your pre-existing medical conditions, providing you have made an honest and accurate disclosure.

You'll also be covered for medical expenses related to motor vehicle accidents, and incidents that occur from outdoor activities you participate in on your journey (provided you comply with all policy conditions).

Indonesia does not have a Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement with the Australian government, which can make treatment costly. Travel Insurance helps protect you from these unexpected expenses.

Costs of medical care in Indonesia can add up quickly for travellers, especially for extended hospital stays. That makes travel insurance essential for travelling with confidence in Bali and beyond.

We can also cover repatriation or evacuation costs you might incur on your journey. Plus, we have a 24/7 emergency medical helpline, available for you to use at any time. We're here to help you get the medical assistance you need when abroad.

Travel safety tips for Bali

Here are a few health and safety considerations to keep in mind when you're travelling to Bali:

  • Bali belly: Food poisoning can affect travellers to Bali, leading to the infamous "Bali belly". Often, Bali belly results from contaminated food or water. When visiting Bali, it's safest to avoid tap water as much as possible and stick to food you're sure has been safely prepared.
  • Mosquito-borne diseases: Bali is home to a number of mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, Zika and yellow fever. Regularly apply mosquito repellant and wear protective, long-sleeve clothing.
  • Driving conditions: Driving in Indonesia is considerably more dangerous than in Australia. Familiarise yourself with driving conditions before setting out on a journey and always drive with care.
  • Theft and scams: As a popular tourist destination, theft and scams can occur in your time in Bali. Always keep your belongings close to hand, and ensure you use reputable businesses for your transport and other activities.

Natural disaster trip cancellation cover for Bali and Indonesia

Indonesia is part of the geological "Ring of Fire", which puts it at significant risk of natural disasters. It is home to over 100 active volcanoes, and earthquakes are frequent.

These events can put your holiday at risk. AllClear Travel Insurance can offer cover for cancellation and curtailment resulting from natural disasters.

If a natural disaster causes your travel service provider to cancel your pre-paid travel arrangements and no reasonable alternative is offered, we may cover your non-refundable unused costs, up to your chosen cancellation limit, subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions in the PDS.

This can help you recover eligible expenses and make new travel plans when the time is right.

What to do before travelling to Bali

To make sure you're ready to kick off your Bali adventure, here's a few simple things to tick off before heading on your way:

  • Travel Insurance: Travel Insurance is a crucial part of travelling to Bali with peace of mind. The right policy will provide the cover you need for medical treatment, curtailment and more.
  • Vaccination: Consult your doctor to get vaccination advice before your trip. This will help you prepare for diseases you may encounter in Indonesia.
  • Rules and customs: Bali and Indonesia are culturally distinct from Australia, with a very different legal system as well. Familiarise yourself with local rules and customs such as wearing modest clothing at religious sites. Ensure you don't run afoul of any laws in Indonesia, as you could face extremely severe consequences.
  • Weather events and natural disasters: Use the Smartraveller website to ensure you're aware of weather events and natural disasters that might affect your trip. Smartraveller is also a great resource for staying up-to-date on other events like security risks.

What do you need to do to enter Bali?

Here's an overview of the major travel documents Australian citizens generally require to enter Bali:

  • Valid passport: Entering Indonesia requires a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry. Smartraveller recommends ensuring your passport has validity for 6 months after your date of leaving Indonesia, and that your passport is not significantly worn or damaged.
  • Return or onward flight booking: Smartraveller also recommends having a return or onward flight booking made when you enter Indonesia.
  • e-Visa on Arrival: If you're travelling to Indonesia for tourism or business meetings, you can apply for an e-Visa on Arrival. You should do this at least 72 hours before travelling to Indonesia.
  • SATUSEHAT Health Pass: This electronic health declaration must be completed before entering Indonesia.
  • Tourist levy: Bali has a tourist levy (or "tourist tax") of 150,000 Indonesia Rupiah per person. This is around AUD $15. This payment can be made online or on arrival.
  • E-customs declaration: You must complete this declaration within 3 days of your departure to Indonesia.

General travel tips for Bali and Indonesia

Here's a few final tips to help your journey to Bali and Indonesia go off without a hitch:

  • Rental vehicles: If you're planning to rent any vehicles in Bali, refer back to your travel insurance policy so you're fully aware what you're covered for, and what you aren't.
  • International Driving Permit (IDP): Australians need to secure an IDP before driving most vehicles in Indonesia.
  • Beaches: There are plenty of stunning swimming spots in Bali. However, just like in Australia, it's safest to stick to patrolled beaches with lifeguards.

Our experts say

"Over a million Australians travel to Bali every year, but not everyone has the right travel insurance for their trip. From trip cancellation to emergency medical expenses, you could face significant financial hardship if you're not covered. AllClear stands out as a great option, particularly for seniors and people living with pre-existing medical conditions. These groups are key points of emphasis for AllClear's cover, making it an excellent choice."

We're here to help!

Do you need Travel Insurance for Bali?

Travel Insurance is an important part of your travels to Bali, offering financial cover for hospital expenses, rental vehicle excess and more. However, it is not a legal requirement to enter the country of Indonesia.

What country is Bali located in?

Bali is an island within Indonesia. When purchasing your travel insurance, simply select Indonesia as your travel destination. Then, we can offer cover for all your travels within Indonesia.

Does Travel Insurance cover rental vehicle insurance excess for people visiting Bali?

AllClear Travel Insurance covers rental vehicle excess (subject to the appropriate additional premium being paid and shown on your Policy) if your rental car is involved in a motor vehicle accident (while you are driving). Your cover also extends to incidents where your car is damaged or stolen while in your custody.

Different insurers can have very different rules regarding rental vehicle excess, so make sure to carefully read your policy before taking off on your trip.

If I'm going to Bali multiple times in a year, do I need to buy a new Travel Insurance policy each time?

Customers taking multiple trips in a single year can purchase our Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance policy. If you have multiple trips to Indonesia or other locations planned for a single year, this policy allows you to get cover for all of them.

This allows you to conveniently secure comprehensive cover for multiple trips all at once. You may also find that a multi-trip policy is more affordable than taking out multiple individual policies.

When should you get Travel Insurance for Bali?

It's a good idea to purchase Travel Insurance as early as possible. Before making your purchase, you should have a good idea of what your trip will consist of, and the activities you'll be doing. This ensures you can pick the right cover for your trip.

At AllClear, we allow customers to purchase Travel Insurance up to a year before your trip begins. This gives you plenty of time to organise the perfect policy for your holiday.

How much does Travel Insurance for Bali cost?

The cost of Bali Travel Insurance depends on a number of different factors. Longer trips are more expensive, as there's more time for costly incidents to occur.

The likelihood of medical and hospital expenses arising will also affect the cost of your Travel Insurance. Premiums are impacted by your age and your pre-existing medical conditions.
