Why is Travel Insurance important in the USA?
Travel Insurance provides financial cover in case things go wrong on your holiday. This means you'll have peace of mind as you travel and can be protected from significant financial hardship.
Here are a few reasons you should strongly consider Travel Insurance on your USA adventure:
- Medical expenses: The US healthcare system is far more costly than many other high-income nations like Australia. If you require medical treatment in the USA, you might find yourself spending significant amounts of money. The right Travel Insurance may cover these costs for you.
- Travel disruptions: Things can go wrong no matter where you travel. Research from Finder has found that one in four Australians experienced travel disruptions, like lost luggage, on their last trip abroad. Getting Travel Insurance can provide financial cover.
- Road trips: The USA is the fourth-largest country in the world by land area, with incredible things to see in every corner. This makes a perfect road trip destination. If you have included the relevant add-on Travel Insurance can also cover you for car rental excess costs in the event of accidents (while you are driving) and theft.
- Natural disasters: As a large, diverse country, the USA can experience a wide array of natural disasters. These events may disrupt your travel plans and result in unexpected financial costs. Travel Insurance may cover you for certain events resulting from unexpected natural disasters, such as delays.
- Outdoor activities: For you, a USA adventure might involve certain sporting or outdoor activities, which could result in medical treatment being required. With the right Travel Insurance cover, you can feel rest assured medical costs will be considered if things go wrong.
We offer a range of policies to help you find the perfect cover for you. Our policies cater to singles, duos and families.
This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.

Travel Insurance cover while travelling to the USA with pre-existing medical conditions
With a famously expensive healthcare system, getting the right cover for your medical conditions is essential before heading to the USA. AllClear offers cover for over 1,300 pre-existing medical conditions, giving you the confidence to travel with the right protection in place.
We make it easy to declare your medical conditions with a straightforward screening process when choosing your policy. You can do this online or over the phone.
Some major conditions we cover include:

What is the cost of medical treatment for travellers in the USA?
Healthcare in the USA is worlds apart from countries like Australia. The average US resident spends almost as the average Australian on healthcare each year.
As a traveller to the USA, your medical costs can balloon even more. Australia does not have a reciprocal healthcare agreement with the USA, which can make treatment costly. Travel Insurance helps protect you from these unexpected expenses.
According to North American Community Hub Statistics, the average cost of a hospital stay per day in the US is $3,130 (approximately AUD $4,800).
When you're recovered and ready to head back home, you can also face significant repatriation costs. For all these reasons, heading to the USA without Travel Insurance can result in massive financial hardship when things go wrong.

Get covered for medical emergency expenses in the USA
Choose AllClear for emergency medical cover in the USA. We offer cover for medical treatment resulting from your declared pre-existing medical conditions.
We'll also cover medical expenses that result from a range of personal injuries you might sustain on your journey. This includes a broad array of activities, from abseiling to windsurfing. See our PDS for more information on exclusions.
We can also cover repatriation, or evacuation costs you might incur on your journey. To provide total peace of mind, we have a 24/7 emergency medical helpline available for you to use at any time. Get in touch and get the advice you need to receive medical treatment abroad.

Cover for your USA adventures
The USA is home to some of the most exciting activities anywhere in the world. From exploring Yellowstone National Park or road tripping on Route 66, you should be able to enjoy yourself without worrying about financial costs if things go wrong.
With AllClear, you can get cover for personal injuries you might sustain while participating in outdoor activities. Whether you're skiing down the mountains of Aspen or hiking in Yosemite National Park, we can cover your medical expenses (provided you comply with all policy conditions).
We also offer policies to cover other incidents relating to activities like skiing and golf, such as theft or damage to your equipment.
Jumping in a rental vehicle for an epic all-American road trip? Our policy can cover your rental car insurance excess (subject to the appropriate additional premium being paid and shown on your Policy) if your rental car is involved in a motor vehicle accident while you are driving, or is damaged or stolen while in your care.
Choose AllClear Travel Insurance, helping you to tick off your bucket list without financial stress.

Health and safety concerns when travelling to the USA
You might not think of the USA as an especially dangerous country, but there are a few major health and safety concerns for you to think about before heading off:
- Mass casualty events and terrorist attacks: According to Smartraveller, there is a "persistent threat" of mass casualty violence and terrorist attacks in the United States. Be mindful of your surroundings when in public.
- Violent crime: Several types of violent crime are significantly more common in the US than in Australia. Gun laws in the US are incredibly relaxed compared to those in Australia, meaning you are far more likely to experience gun-related incidents when travelling.
- Weather events and natural disasters: The US is a large country with a wide array of weather conditions and potential natural disasters. In different parts of the country, hurricanes, earthquakes and blizzards are fairly common. In addition to disrupting your trip, these events can pose serious health and safety risks.

What to do before travelling to the USA
A safe and happy holiday requires proper preparation. Here are some simple steps you can take to help your trip go off without any hiccups:
- Travel Insurance: Securing the right Travel Insurance policy is one of the most important steps you can take for a successful holiday. Make sure you know exactly what your policy covers you for, and follow all relevant conditions.
- Understand visa requirements: Australian citizens can travel to the US for business or tourism for up to 90 days without needing a visa. Visa-free travellers must complete an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) application to be eligible for the USA's Visa Waiver Program. If you plan to stay in the US for a longer period or are travelling for other reasons, you will need a visa to enter.
- Travel warnings: Check the Smartraveller website for the most up-to-date information for your trip. It will let you know about upcoming major weather events, political unrest and more. It also offers helpful information about local laws and contacts.
- Vaccination: Consult your doctor and get vaccination advice before heading on your trip. This will ensure you are immunised against dangerous diseases you might encounter on your holiday.

Travel tips for the USA
You shouldn't have too much culture shock when you visit the USA, but there are still some important things to know before taking off:
- Drive on the right-hand side: In the USA, cars drive on the right-hand side of the road. Consider how you can remember this every time you begin driving. For example, you might place a sticky note in your vehicle.
- Tipping: Tipping is an important custom in the US. It's expected for a wide range of service workers, especially in hospitality. Sometimes, it will even be automatically charged to you, such as if you are with a large party at a restaurant. 15% is usually seen as the minimum acceptable tipping percentage.
- Power plugs and voltage: Type A and B power plugs are used in the USA. The standard voltage is 120 volts.
- Varying state laws: Laws are quite different from one US state to another. For example, states set their own speed limits, and there are some differences in drink driving laws. Be sure to research the laws in place in each location you travel to.
