Why do you need Travel Insurance if you live with diabetes?
While you are travelling, it can be difficult to manage your diabetes due to time zone differences and potentially losing or running out of medication. With AllClear Travel Insurance, you can be covered if you need to be hospitalised or if yours is lost or stolen. This helps you relax and enjoy your holiday without having to worry about bills or hospital fees.
Reasons to purchase AllClear’s Travel Insurance for people living with diabetes include:
- Peace of mind: In addition to managing your diabetes and medications, other incidents may occur while you’re on holiday. With Travel Insurance, you can worry less about the cost of emergency treatments and focus on having a good time while you’re overseas.
- Overseas medical fees: The cost of medical treatment can vary significantly from country to country. With Travel Insurance, you are covered if you need medication for your diabetes if yours is lost or stolen, as well as other hospital treatments. This includes the potential need for medical repatriation.
- Lost or stolen baggage: You have cover if your luggage is stolen or lost while you are travelling.
- Natural disaster cover: Some locations around the world have a potential risk of floods, storms and other natural disasters. If it’s included in your policy and your holiday provider doesn’t offer an alternative, AllClear can cover cancellations or delays caused by natural disasters.
- Trip cancellation: If your diabetes or other unforeseen events cause you to delay or cancel your trip, AllClear can cover the cost of hotels and similar expenses.
This is general advice only and subject to our terms and conditions. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you. Always provide an honest and accurate medical declaration.

- Your condition worsens while you are on your trip, and you need hospital treatment or repatriation.
What if I have gestational diabetes?
All pre-existing health conditions are considered for cover at AllClear, including gestational diabetes, as long as the condition is declared during the initial medical screening.
Will your policy cover replacing insulin while overseas?
Yes, AllClear’s Travel Insurance policy for diabetes will cover replacing lost insulin and other crucial medication while overseas if yours is lost or stolen.

Disclosing diabetes with AllClear
While creating your initial quote, you will be asked to take reasonable care to make an honest and accurate disclosure declaring any pre-existing health conditions you may be living with, including diabetes. This is done as part of our screening process, which can be completed either online or over the phone.
Some questions we may ask during this process include:
- What age were you when you were diagnosed?
- Are you currently receiving treatment, or do you have plans to begin treatment?
- Have you ever been admitted to hospital unexpectedly?
- Have you undergone any surgery, or received treatment as an inpatient or outpatient?
- Have you had any referrals or medical investigations related to your health?
It’s essential that you declare all pre-existing medical conditions, not just diabetes. Failing to do so may result in your policy being void, meaning you will not be covered while you are on holiday.
Levels of Travel Insurance cover
We offer three levels of cover: Gold Plus, Gold and Traveller. The Traveller product is only available for Single Trip policies. This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.
What does AllClear’s Travel Insurance cover?
AllClear’s Travel Insurance for diabetes covers overseasmedical treatment and trip cancellations or delays.
What's covered?
Essential medications, diagnostic tests, and medical procedures needed to treat illness or injury while you’re overseas are included, terms and conditions apply. Your Travel Insurance can also help with the cost of returning to Australia if it’s medically necessary.
If unexpected events force you to cancel your holiday before it begins, your Travel Insurance may reimburse prepaid expenses such as unused flights and accommodation.
If an emergency means you need to return home earlier than planned, your policy may offer help to cover some of your unused travel costs.
If your flight is delayed, your policy may cover extra expenses like meals, transport or temporary accommodation.
If your luggage or personal items are lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged while travelling, your insurance may help with the cost of replacing them.
Depending on your level of insurance, you may be eligible for help with legal fees if you pursue compensation for an incident that occurs during your trip.
AllClear doesn’t impose an upper age limit on Travel Insurance. You’re welcome to purchase our insurance no matter your age.
What’s not covered?
For most claims, if the amount is below the excess stated in your policy, you will not receive a reimbursement.
Your insurance only applies to the region you nominated when you took out your policy, whether that’s within Australia or overseas. Travelling beyond that area means you may not be covered.
If you attempt to claim for something that had already happened or was known before you purchased your policy or booked your trip, you may not be covered.
To make sure you’re protected for medical treatment, it’s essential to declare all relevant health conditions when taking out your insurance. If you need care for a condition you didn’t disclose, your policy may not cover it.
If you simply decide not to travel, you generally won’t be covered. Cancellation benefits only apply if the reason meets the criteria set out in your policy.
This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.

Get covered for emergency medical expenses
While travelling can be an incredible experience, it does come with a few risks that you should be aware of. AllClear can cover cancellation fees and medical costs that you may run into while overseas, letting you enjoy your holiday with less stress.
Some countries have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia. This means that in these nations, some medical expenses will be covered by their healthcare system. However, for cover related to diabetes treatment, a specialist provider like AllClear may offer more comprehensive cover.
For those travelling without any insurance, the cost of treating diabetes can become quite high. In the United States, for example, the cost of insulin can be up to AUD $156 per vial. Without any cover, these fees can become significant.
With AllClear Travel Insurance, you have cover for medical treatment while you are overseas, including for insulin and other treatment related to diabetes. Our policies also include a 24/7 helpline to give you support when you need it, no matter where you are.
For further details on our medical cover and exclusions, please review our PDS.

How much is Travel Insurance for people living with diabetes?
The cost of Travel Insurance for diabetes can change depending on the following factors:
- The type of diabetes: The details of your diabetes, such as the time since diagnosis, severity and type, may affect the price of your premium.
- Other pre-existing health conditions: Any other pre-existing health conditions you are living with may also affect the total cost of your health insurance.
- Length of trip: The longer you are away, the more time there is for an incident to occur, which affects your total premium cost.
- Destinations: Visiting destinations with greater potential risks may increase the cost of your Travel Insurance, as it may increase the likelihood of needing treatment.
- Added cover: Any additional cover you add to your total policy, such as cruise cover, will increase the total cost of your Travel Insurance.
With Seniors Travel Insurance, you can enjoy your travels with confidence that you're protected.

Preparing for travelling with diabetes
To stay safe while travelling with diabetes, there are a few steps you should take:
- Consult your doctor: Book a consultation with your healthcare professional before you consider booking any trips. Confirm that you are fit to fly, and that you have prescriptions for any medication you need while you’re away. You may also need a letter with the details of your diabetes and other conditions for airlines, hotels and other organisers.
- Wear ID: Be sure to wear a medical identification bracelet while you are travelling. That way, first responders and other medical personnel can check your condition if an incident happens and you are unconscious. You may also consider registering with the National Diabetes Service Scheme.
- Contact your airline: After booking your flights, it’s a good idea to call your airline and inform them of your condition. If you wear an electronic device to monitor your blood glucose levels or infuse insulin, check with the airline that it can be operated in-flight.
- Pack extra medication: Due to delays or cancellations, you may want to consider packing extra medication and keeping it on your person at all times.

Tips for travelling with diabetes
Other tips to have a safe, fun trip include:
- Travel Insurance: By buying Travel Insurance before heading off on your holiday, you can reduce stress you may be facing while travelling and focus on having a good time. Just make sure you know exactly what you are covered for and that you follow the relevant conditions.
- Test blood glucose levels: After non-routine activities, such as sunbathing, remember to test your blood glucose levels to make sure your blood glucose levels remain stable, and everything is on track.
- Inform your companions: Be sure to tell your travelling companions that you are living with diabetes. That way, you can plan more fitting activities together as a group, avoid cuisine that may negatively affect you, and you will have more assistance on your trip.
- Be aware of time zones: Time zone changes may affect your routine schedule for taking medication. Consider setting an alarm on your phone to make sure you do not lose track of when to take medication.
- Emergency contacts: Keep a list of your medications and emergency contacts on your person while you are travelling. You should also look up the emergency number for the police, ambulance and fire safety services, as well as the contact details of the Australian embassy.
These are recommendations only, we encourage you to research fully the best way to travel for people who live with diabetes.

Do you have to declare prediabetes for Travel Insurance?
Yes, you need to declare all pre-existing medical conditions during your screening process. That way, we can provide you with the most comprehensive cover while you are overseas.
Should I carry an insulin pen in flight?
Yes, you should carry your insulin pen in your carry-on luggage, not in your checked baggage, as you may need to use it. This also prevents the pen from being exposed to extreme temperatures.
You may need to give the flight staff a doctor's letter and prescriptions, and declare needles with security before flying as well.
Does AllClear Travel Insurance have an upper age limit on policies?
No, AllClear has no upper age limit on our Travel Insurance policies. We believe everyone should experience their dream holiday, no matter their age.
Can you get Travel Insurance if you use insulin?
Yes, you can purchase AllClear Travel Insurance if you are using insulin. If your insulin is lost or stolen while you are travelling, you will also be covered for replacement medication.
Do diabetics get priority boarding?
No, being diabetic typically does not automatically qualify you for priority boarding. However, airlines may make exceptions for those with medical needs and require additional time and assistance.
Be sure to contact the airline ahead of time to discuss your priority boarding options.
Should diabetics wear flight socks?
Typically, people with diabetes can wear flight/compression socks, but this can vary on a case-by-case basis. Be sure to consult your doctor first to ensure flight socks are right for your condition.
What happens if you don’t declare pre-existing medical conditions in Travel Insurance?
If you fail to declare all your pre-existing medical conditions, not just the ones related to your diabetes, your policy may be invalid, and claims related to that condition won’t be covered.
Please be sure to declare all your conditions during your screening process.
What if the state of my diabetes changes after I purchase my policy?
If your condition changes after you purchase your policy, you must update your medical screening as soon as possible. You should also consult your medical professional to confirm that you are still fit to travel and obtain written confirmation.
AllClear reserves the right to request a letter from your medical professional outlining your condition and confirming whether it has improved or worsened, and that you remain fit to travel.
Will I need to give you medical documents during my screening?
Typically, no, you do not need to provide us with documents as part of your screening process. If there are any exceptions, we will inform you as soon as possible to give you time to prepare them.
