Disclosing pre-existing medical conditions
Do you have to declare epilepsy when applying for Travel Insurance?
Yes, you should always declare epilepsy during your medical screening. If you do not declare epilepsy and any other pre-existing health conditions, your insurance policy and any claims you make could be affected. Declaring your medical history helps us offer cover that suits your condition and the nature of your trip.
What types of epilepsy are covered by AllClear’s Travel Insurance?
We offer epilepsy Travel Insurance policies for many seizure types, including:
- Absence seizures
- Focal seizures
- Generalised tonic-clonic seizures
- Photosensitive epilepsy
- Atonic seizures
- Myoclonic seizures
If your exact seizure type is not listed, simply tell us during medical screening. We will let you know if we can provide cover. For more details on medical cover and exclusions, please see our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD).
How to declare epilepsy with AllClear
When getting your quote, you will be asked to take reasonable care to ensure you declare any pre-existing medical conditions youmay be living with. This is done as part of our general screening process, which can be done online or over the phone.
During the screening, we may ask you questions such as:
- When were you diagnosed?
- How often do you have seizures, and when was your most recent seizure?
- Have you had any unplanned hospital admissions?
- Do you take regular epilepsy medication or anti-seizure medications?
- Have you undergone any surgery or received inpatient or outpatient care?
- Have you had any referrals or medical investigations?
Please be sure to declare all the details of any pre-existing medical condition you may have, as well as epilepsy. If you don’t, your policy may be invalidated.
Levels of Travel Insurance cover
We offer three levels of cover: Gold Plus, Gold and Traveller. The Traveller product is only available for Single Trip policies. This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.
What does AllClear’s Travel Insurance cover?
AllClear’s Travel Insurance policies cover you for unexpected trip cancellations and medical treatments while you’re overseas.
What's covered?
Cover for medications, tests, and procedures needed to treat illnesses or injuries while travelling. Travel Insurance may also cover the cost of repatriation back to Australia.
If something unexpected forces you to cancel your trip before departure, Travel Insurance can help recover the cost of unused flights and accommodation.
Cover for emergencies that require you to end your trip early and return home sooner than planned.
Travel Insurance may provide compensation for additional expenses caused by flight delays.
Luggage and personal items can be covered if they’re lost, stolen, or damaged.
Depending on your policy, legal costs incurred while seeking compensation for incidents that occur during your trip may be covered.
We don’t impose an upper age limit on our Travel Insurance policies.
What’s not covered?
For most claims, Travel Insurance won’t cover amounts below the applicable excess.
Your policy only provides cover for the region you selected when you purchased the policy. This includes domestic travel within Australia or international destinations, depending on your cover.

All relevant medical conditions must be declared to make sure they’re covered. If you need treatment for an undeclared condition, it won’t be included under your policy.
While plans can change, cancellation cover only applies if your reason for cancelling is listed in the policy’s terms and conditions.

Cover for outdoor activities
There are countless outdoor activities to enjoy when travelling, from relaxing walks to more adventurous pursuits. With AllClear’s Travel Insurance for epilepsy, you can take part in covered activities like kayaking or hiking without the worry of unexpected medical bills if something goes wrong.
If the activity is included in your policy, we can help with eligible medical costs that arise while you’re taking part. Always check with your doctor before your trip to make sure your chosen activities are safe for you, and avoid any that may not be suited to epilepsy.
Examples of activities we cover include:
- Hiking (on recognised routes, up to 3,000 metres)
- Cycling (excluding BMX and mountain biking)
- Kayaking (in calm waters)
- Snorkelling (to 10 metres deep)
- Suba diving (to 30 metres deep)
- Skiing (where the appropriate winter sports premium has been paid)
- And more
If you are planning a road trip, AllClear can also help you with rental car insurance excess (subject to the appropriate premium being paid and shown on your policy). We’ll provide cover if your hired car is damaged, stolen, or involved in a motor accident while in your care.
For more information on our outdoor activities and rental car cover, please review our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD).

Get covered for emergency medical expenses
The world is full of amazing places to explore, but when travelling with epilepsy, it’s important to be prepared for potential risks. With AllClear, you have support for emergency medical costs wherever your trip takes you.
Some countries have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia, which can cover limited public healthcare needs. However, this does not replace Travel Insurance, which provides more comprehensive protection tailored to your condition.
Without the right cover, overseas medical treatment can be extremely expensive. For example, the average cost of one night in a hospital in Thailand can exceed AUD $1,250. For travellers without Travel Insurance, these costs can become stressful.
By choosing AllClear, you’ll have help with eligible medical fees while abroad, giving you confidence that the care you may need is covered. Every policy also includes a 24/7 emergency helpline, so no matter where you are in the world, assistance is always available.
For more details on medical cover and exclusions, please see our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD).

How much is Travel Insurance for people living with epilepsy?
The precise cost of Travel Insurance can vary dependingon a range of factors, including:
- The severity of your condition: The exact nature of your condition and its severity may affect the price of your premium. These factors may increase the chances of needing medical treatment while you’reaway.
- Other pre-existing medical conditions: Any pre-existing medical conditions you are living with in addition to epilepsy could also impact the cost of your policy.
- Length of holiday: The longer your holiday is, the more likely it is that an incident that needs treatment could occur. This may affect the price of your premium.
- Destinations: Some areas you may travel to havea higher degree of risk than others. Depending on where you are going, your destination may increase the price of your policy.
- Additional cover: Any policies you add to your total cover, such as cruise insurance or cover for certain valuables, will raise the overall cost of your policy.

Travelling companion cancellation cover
AllClear can also protect your travel companions, so you’re not the only one covered on your trip. If you need to cancel or cut your holiday short because of a pre-existing medical condition such as epilepsy, we can help with your companion’s costs as well as your own.
Travel companion cancellation cover can include:
- Reimbursement for deposits lost on unused flights, accommodation or excursions cancelled before departure due to a pre-existing condition.
- Cover for the remaining value of the trip if it has to be ended early because of epilepsy or another covered condition.
At AllClear, we want both you and the people you travel with to enjoy more peace of mind on your holiday. For more information, please see our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD).

How to prepare for a trip when you have epilepsy
A little preparation makes a big difference to how confident you feel on holiday. Here are some useful tips for a safe and enjoyable trip:
- Consult your doctor early: Talk to your medical practitioner about your fitness to travel, seizure action plans, and any adjustments needed for your medication regimen across different time zones. Ask about vaccinations or medicines that may not be compatible with your current anti-seizure medications.
- Plan for rest: Jet lag and lack of sleep can trigger seizures. Incorporate downtime into your itinerary and try to keep a regular sleep routine.
- Bring enough medication: Pack enough for your whole trip plus extra, in case of delays. Keep it in its original packaging, stored in your hand luggage or carry-on luggage, along with a copy of your prescription. Some medicines are controlled drugs in certain countries, so you may need a doctor’s letter. Be sure to check for government advice on Smartraveller before you go.
- Wear a medical ID bracelet: Carry key medical records and emergency contacts. If you lose consciousness, this makes it easier for others to get you the medical assistance you need.
- Notify your travel agent or airline: Let your travel agent, airline and other relevant authorities know about any requirements, such as special seating or refrigerated storage for epilepsy medicines. You should also carry your doctor’s letter in case security staff ask questions.
- Keep emergency contacts handy: Look up local emergency numbers and the details of the nearest Australian consulate before you travel.

Travel Insurance for people with epilepsy FAQs
If you have not had a siezure in a while, do you still have to declare epilepsy?
Yes, you still need to declare epilepsy and any history of seizures during medical screening, even if you have been seizure-free for a long time. This helps us create the right policy and avoid issues with claims relating to undeclared conditions.
If you have an epilepsy-related condition, will it be covered under epilepsy?
Tell us about all your medical conditions during your screening call. We consider related conditions alongside epilepsy, so we can advise on the right cover for you.
Can you still get Travel Insurance if your doctor has advised you not to travel?
If your doctor says you are not fit to travel, you should not travel. Travelling against medical advice can risk your well-being and affect your insurance policy.
Is any seizure considered epilepsy?
No, epilepsy is a neurological condition defined by a tendency to have recurrent, unprovoked seizures. A single provoked seizure may not mean epilepsy. Speak with your healthcare specialist for individual advice.
Will epilepsy affect thecost of your Travel Insurance?
It may. Pricing reflects your pre-existing medical condition and trip details. By declaring everything, you'll receive a quote that properly meets your needs.
What does Travel Insurance not cover?
Claims for undeclared pre-existing medical conditions, travelling outside the insured region, claims below the excess, and situations known before buying your policy are generally not covered. Always check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD).
