Why do you need Travel Insurance if you experience asthma?

Travelling is a fantastic experience. However, it can be stressful to plan flights and activities when travelling with asthma. With AllClear’s Travel Insurance, we can help reduce some of the uncertainty around travelling if you experience asthma by covering unexpected medical costs if something goes wrong.

Some of the reasons to get Travel insurance if you experience asthma include:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety: Travelling is stressful enough without having to worry about managing a health condition or the costs of medical treatment. With Travel Insurance, you can relax and enjoy your trip knowing your medical fees are covered if you need treatment.
  • Cover for unexpected triggers: You may be exposed to asthma triggers you were unaware of while on your holiday. With AllClear, you are covered for medical fees caused by a sudden asthma attack, provided it isn’t related to excluded activities. Excluded activities and the terms and conditions are in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). You should read the PDS to ensure that the insurance meets your needs, requirements and financial objectives. We can also cover the cost of asthma medication you may need while overseas should your medication be lost or stolen.
  • Varying costs of healthcare: The cost of medical treatment can vary widely around the world. AllClear Travel Insurance can cover you for the cost of hospital stays, medical treatment and repatriation while you're away.
  • Cancellations and delays: If your trip is delayed or cancelled due to your asthma, you are covered for the cost of unused travel and accommodation.

This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.

Disclosing pre-existing medical conditions

How to declare your asthma condition to AllClear

When getting your quote, you will be asked to take reasonable care to ensure you declare any pre-existing medical conditions you may be living with. This is done as part of our general screening process, which can be done online or over the phone. Please remember to answer all medical questions honestly and accurately as this may have an impact on your claim should you ned to make one.

During the screening process, we may ask you the following questions:

  • At what age were you diagnosed?
  • Are you currently receiving treatment, or do you have treatment planned?
  • Have you experienced any unplanned hospital admissions?
  • Have you undergone any surgeries or received inpatient/outpatient care?
  • Have you had any medical referrals or diagnostic investigations?

Please declare any relevant health issues you are living with. Your policy may be invalidated if you do not. Just make sure you take reasonable care to provide complete and accurate information when answering our questions.

Do you need to declare your asthma, even if it’s mild?

Yes, no matter how mild or subtle your asthma symptoms are, you will need to declare asthma. This is to ensure you are still covered if you have an attack or need treatment related to the condition while overseas.

Trip cancellation:

If something unexpected pops up and you need to cancel your trip before you leave, your Travel Insurance can help recover the cost of unused flights, accommodation, and other prepaid expenses.

Returning home early:

Cover for emergencies thatcut your trip short and require you to return home earlier than planned.

Travel delays:

Your policy may include cover for additional expenses due to flight or transport delays.

Personal belongings:

Cover for your luggage and personal items if they’re lost, stolen, or damaged during your travels.

Legal expenses:

Depending on your level of cover, legal costs may be included if you're seeking compensation for incidents that occur while you're away.

No upper age limit:

We don’t place an age limit on our Travel Insurance policies. Cover is available for travellers of all ages.

What’s not covered?

Claims below the value of the excess:

In most cases, claims that fall below your policy excess won't be paid.

Travelling outside your region of cover:

You're only covered for the destinations or regions you selected when you took out your policy. This applies to both international trips and domestic travel within Australia.

Known events or circumstances:

You may not be covered for claims related to situations or events you were already aware of before taking out cover or booking your trip.

Undeclared medical conditions:

Make sure you declare all relevant medical conditions. If something’s not disclosed, it may not be covered under your policy.

Choosing not to travel:

We know that plans change, but you’re only covered for cancellation if the reason is within the policy terms and conditions.

This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.

For more information on our outdoor activities cover, please review our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD).

Cruise holidays for people who experience asthma

If you are living with asthma, a cruise holiday can be a fantastic way to see the world with less stress. A cruise trip lets you sit back and relax your way. Qualified help can be more accessible, and it may be easier to avoid activities that could trigger your condition.

With AllClear’s Cruise Travel Insurance, you have cover for:

  • Cabin confinement if you are asked to stay in your room due to illness.
  • Missed ports if the total number of ports docked in is less than what was scheduled on your itinerary.
  • Medical emergencies you may experience due to asthma or other medical conditions.

For more information on AllClear’s cruise cover, please review our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD).

Get covered for emergency medical expenses

A holiday is a fantastic opportunity to have unforgettable experiences. However, there are possible risks that can come with travelling that you should be aware of. AllClear Travel Insurance helps you enjoy your journey with more confidence, knowing you are covered in case of an emergency.

Some nations have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia. When travelling in these countries, some medical expenses will be covered by their healthcare system. However, AllClear can offer Travel Insurance that includes cover for pre-existing medical conditions, such as asthma, where this is permitted under local laws and regulations.

If you do not have Travel Insurance, the cost of treating asthma can become quite high. According to The Lancet, being treated for asthma in the Philippines can cost up to AUD $242, not including hospital stays. Without Travel Insurance, these treatment costs can quickly stack up.

With AllClear, you have cover for medical treatment for medical conditions, including treatments related to your asthma. Get the care you need without stressing about your medical bill.

We also offer access to a 24/7 helpline with all of our policies, so we can guide you through an emergency, no matter where you are.

For more on our medical cover and exclusions, please review our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD).

How much is Travel Insurance for people who experience asthma?

How much might Travel Insurance be for people who experience asthma costs can vary depending on the following reasons:

  • Your asthma diagnosis: The exact nature of your asthma, such as its severity, may affect your premium due to the likelihood of treatment.
  • Other pre-existing conditions: If you are living with other medical conditions in addition to asthma, these will also affect the overall cost of your policy.
  • How long you are away for: The longer your trip is, the more chances there are for an incident to happen. This will increase the total cost of your Travel Insurance.
  • Your destination: Depending on where you are going, the cost of your premium maybe higher. This is because some locations carry a higher risk of visiting than others.
  • Added policies: Any extra policies you have added to your Travel Insurance, such as cruise cover or outdoor activities, will also increase the total price of your insurance.

Travelling companion cancellation cover

We offer cancellation cover for you and any companions travelling with you. If you're unable to depart or need to end your trip early due to circumstances related to your asthma, we may also cover your companion’s expenses.

Our cover includes:

  • Cover for deposits lost on unused flights, accommodation, or excursions.
  • Cover for any remaining trip costs if your companion has to cut their journey short due to a medical issue affecting you.

Tips for travelling with asthma

Travelling with asthma can make you feel stressed or anxious, but with the right preparation, you can enjoy a smooth, easy trip. Here are a few steps to take when travelling with asthma:

  • Travel Insurance: You should consider purchasing Travel Insurance, as it can help you feel less anxious about medical costs while you’re travelling, giving you more opportunities to relax and enjoy yourself. Please be sure you’ve reviewed your policy and that you are following all the relevant conditions.
  • Consult with your doctor: Book a consultation with your medical practitioner before you leave to make sure you are fit to travel. Ask for tips on managing asthma while you are away. You should also check if any of your medication is illegal in the country you are visiting, and ask for potential replacements if they are.
  • Medication: Keep your medication close to hand as often as possible. Ask for a doctor's note if you need one for the airline or other organisations. Consider packing an extra inhaler.
  • Activity planning: Be sure to plan activities that are compatible with your condition. Consider avoiding high altitudes or activities that may trigger an asthma attack.
  • Emergency planning: You should create a list of your medications and emergency contacts to carry with you, in case of a severe asthma attack. You should also look up the relevant emergency numbers, as well as the details of the Australian embassy.
  • Travel companions: Travel companions can help you in case of an attack, making your trip safer. Seniors Travel Insurance provides essential cover for older travellers, offering protection against unexpected events on your holiday, such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost baggage. Travel Insurance is crucial, as it covers you for potential risks while travelling.
