Disclosing pre-existing medical conditions

How to declare high blood pressure with AllClear

When you are choosing your policy, you must take reasonable care to declare any pre-existing conditions, including high blood pressure, as part of our medical screening process. You can do this with us either over the phone or online.

Some questions we may ask during your medical assessment include:

  • What was your age when you were diagnosed?
  • Are you currently undergoing treatment, or are you planning to?
  • Have you ever had an unexpected hospital admission?
  • Have you had any surgery or outpatient/inpatient treatments?
  • Have you had any referrals or investigations related to your health?

It is very important that you declare any pre-existing medical condition, not just the ones related to high blood pressure. Your answers should be honest and accurate. If you fail to do so, your policy may be invalidated, and you will be left to cover overseas medical costs on your own.

What conditions don’t need to be declared?

You don’t need to declare if you have a cold or flu that doesn't need prescribed medication or a doctor's appointment. You also don’t have to declare any prescribed contraceptives or a complication-free pregnancy.

What does AllClear’s Travel Insurance cover?

With AllClear’s Travel Insurance policies for people living with high blood pressure, you are covered for unexpected overseas medical treatment, trip delays or cancellations.

What's covered?

Emergency medical treatment and repatriation:

Cover for essential medications, diagnostic tests, and medical procedures needed to manage illnesses or injuries while you're overseas. Your Travel Insurance may also cover the cost of returning you to Australia if medically necessary.

Trip cancellation:

If unforeseen events force you to cancel your holiday before you depart, Travel Insurance can help reimburse prepaid costs like airfares and accommodation.

Cutting your trip short:

Provides cover if an emergency means you need to head home sooner than expected, helping to recover some of your unused travel expenses.

Travel delays:

If your flight is delayed, your policy may cover extra costs such as meals, transport, or alternative accommodation.

Lost or damaged belongings:

Personal items and luggage are covered if they’re lost, stolen or accidentally damaged during your travels.

Legal costs:

Depending on your level of cover, your insurance policy may help with legal fees if you need to pursue compensation for an incident that happens while you’re away.

No age restrictions:

We don’t set an upper age limit on our Travel Insurance policies, so you're welcome to apply no matter your age.

What’s not covered?

Claims under the excess:

For most claims, you may not be reimbursed if the amount is less than your policy’s nominated excess.

Trips outside the region of cover:

Your cover only applies to the specific region you selected when you took out your policy, whether that’s within Australia or for travel overseas. Venturing outside that area means you’re not covered.

Known events or existing circumstances:

If you try to claim something you already knew about before purchasing your policy or booking your trip, it’s unlikely to be accepted.

Undisclosed medical conditions:

To make sure your medical needs are covered, it’s important to declare all relevant health issues when you take out your Travel Insurance. If treatment is needed for a condition you didn’t disclose, your policy may not cover it.

Choosing not to travel:

If you simply decide not to go, you generally won’t be able to claim. Cancellation benefits only apply if the reason meets the specific criteria outlined in your policy wording.

This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.

Get covered for emergency medical expenses

No matter where you are going on holiday, you are sure to make incredible memories and have unforgettable experiences. However, there are potential risks you may run into while travelling. With AllClear, you are covered for emergency medical costs worldwide.

Some countries have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia. With an RHCA, some medical expenses can be covered by that country's medical system. However, even in an RHCA nation, you can still benefit from Travel Insurance to make sure you are covered for specialist care you may need for your high blood pressure.

Without an RHCA or Travel Insurance, receiving medical treatment overseas can become costly, with travellers often required to pay the full cost of care upfront. In Vietnam, the cost of a heart transplant can reach up to $150,000. For travellers without any medical cover, these medical expenses could become significant.

By using AllClear’s Travel Insurance, you are covered for medical costs while overseas. Relax and enjoy your holiday knowing you can be compensated if an incident occurs.

Our policies also include a 24/7 emergency helpline, so you can get the help you need no matter where you are.

For more details on medical cover and exclusions, please see our PDS.

What may affect the cost of Travel Insurance for people who experience high blood pressure?

The exact price of Travel Insurance for high blood pressure can change depending on several factors, such as:

  • The cause of your high blood pressure: Exactly what is causing your high blood pressure may affect the price of your premium. This is due to the conditions increasing the likelihood of you needing medical attention while overseas.
  • Other pre-existing medical conditions: Any pre-existing medical conditions you are living with in addition to your high blood pressure could also increase the cost of your policy.
  • Trip length: The longer you are overseas, the more time there is for an incident to happen. This may increase the price of your overall policy.
  • Destination: Some locations you may be visiting have a higher risk potential than others. Depending on your exact destination, the overall cost of your premium may increase.
  • Additional extras: Adding any additional policies or details, such as cruise cover, will increase the final price of your Travel Insurance.

Travelling companion cancellation cover

AllClear also offers cover for your travelling companions. If you're unable to take your trip or need to come home early due to a pre-existing condition related to high blood pressure, we can also cover your travel companion’s expenses alongside your own.

Companion cover can include:

  • Reimbursement for deposits lost on unused accommodation, flights, or pre-booked activities if your trip is cancelled before departure due to a pre-existing medical issue.
  • Compensation for the unused portion of your companion’s trip if your travels are cut short because of your pre-existing medical conditions.

At AllClear, we’re committed to helping you and your travel companions feel more secure while away. For full details, please refer to our PDS.

Still have questions?

We're here to help!

Do I need to declare high blood pressure when buying Travel Insurance?

Yes, you must declare all medical conditions during our screening process, including high blood pressure. If you do not declare your conditions, we may not be able to approve your claims, or your cover may be void.

If you are waiting on a diagnosis related to high blood pressure, you must still declare it to ensure we can offer comprehensive cover related to your condition.

Is high blood pressure classified as a medical condition?

Yes, high blood pressure, including when it is called hypertension, is classified as a long-term medical condition.

Please be sure to declare if you have high blood pressure during your initial screening call. Otherwise, we may not be able to cover high blood pressure-related treatment.

Can high blood pressure affect a Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance policy?

Any medical conditions you’ve declared, including high blood pressure, may affect the cost of your premium, including for Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance. This is because the condition may increase the likelihood of needing treatment while overseas.

What is the highest blood pressure you can fly with?

There isn’t an exact blood pressure limit for flying. Please consult with your doctor before you fly to determine if you are fit to travel, especially if your readings are consistently over 140/90 mmHg.

Does taking blood pressure tablets affect Travel Insurance?

Any medication you are taking typically does not affect your Travel Insurance policy. However, any medication you are taking, including blood pressure tablets, needs to be declared as part of your initial screening process.

What does Travel Insurance not cover?

Most standard Travel Insurance policies don’t automatically include cover for pre-existing medical conditions. To be properly covered for these, you’ll likely need a specialised Travel Insurance policy that specifically caters to your medical needs.

Travel Insurance may also exclude claims that arise from:

  • Risky or reckless behaviour
  • Situations or incidents you were already aware of before buying your policy

It’s important to read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and check the eligibility requirements before you head off. This will give you a better idea of what your policy includes and what it doesn’t.
