Why is Travel Insurance important for Japan?

Whether you’re exploring Japan to experience its unique cultural heritage or hitting the slopes of Shiga Kogen, you’re bound to have an unforgettable trip you won’t find anywhere else. However, unforeseen circumstances can get in the way when you travel.

A dream trip can become stressful without comprehensive cover. Here are five reasons to prioritise Travel Insurance on your trip to Japan:

  • Emergency medical expenses: If you need emergency healthcare in Japan, it can become costly for travellers without the right insurance.
  • Cancellation cover: Unforeseen events could mean you have to cancel your holiday.
  • Natural disasters: Japan is often vulnerable to natural disasters due to its climate and topography. Travellers may experience earthquakes or typhoons. Travellers should check if natural disaster cover is included on their policy.
  • Lost or stolen belongings: AllClear’s comprehensive Travel Insurance includes cover for your personal belongings if they're lost or stolen when abroad.
  • Outdoor adventures: From skiing to beachside adventures or exploring temples in the mountains, Japan is full of incredible outdoor adventures. If you get injured while participating in outdoor activities, travel insurance can help to cover your overseas medical costs.

What does AllClear's Japan Travel Insurance cover?

Our Japan Travel Insurance covers a wide variety of events and expenses that may arise on your trip. We tailor our policies for senior travellers and those living with pre-existing medical conditions to help more people see the world.

Here’s a summary of what our policies do and don’t cover:

What's covered?

Emergency medical expenses and repatriation:

Covers the cost of hospital expenses, tests, procedures and medications required to treat an illness or injury when travelling. You’ll also be covered if a treatment requires medical evacuation.

Trip cancellations:

Cover for cancelled flights and accommodations if an unexpected event forces you to cancel your holiday before it begins.

Trips cut short:

Cover for extra costs that arise if an overseas medical emergency forces you home.

Travel delays:

Compensation for extra costs that arise if your flight is delayed.

Personal baggage and belongings:

Covers your baggage and personal effects against possible loss or theft during your trip.

Legal protection:

Cover for legal costs you may incur while making claims for an incident that occurs during your trip.

All ages:

Our policies have no upper age limit, allowing you to enjoy peace of mind on your trip, no matter your age.

What’s not covered?

Claims below the excess amount:

For most claims, you won't be covered for your travel insurance excess (the first part of your claim).

Trips outside your covered region:

You’ll be asked to select a region of cover as part of your travel insurance. Trips outside of this region will not be covered by your policy.

Known events or circumstances:

You won’t be covered if the claim relates to issues that you were aware of before buying your insurance or booking your trip.

Undeclared medical conditions:

We can’t provide cover for medical conditions you haven’t declared to us.

Choosing not to travel:

We understand how easily travel plans can change, but we can only cover cancellations when they meet your policy’s terms and conditions.

This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.

Cover for outdoor activities in Japan

Ready to have an unforgettable adventure in the Land of the Rising Sun? Japan has incredible sights to see and activities to do all year round, whether that’s hiking the Kumano Kodo or kayaking in Okinawa.

AllClear’s comprehensive Travel Insurance covers the costs of injuries or issues you may experience while exploring Japan. We’re here to help you enjoy your outdoor holiday without worrying about your medical bill.

Planning to trek on Mount Fuji or other Japanese titans? AllClear offers cover for hiking up to 3,000 metres.

Our policy also includes cover for your rental car insurance excess if your rental vehicle is involved in an accident while you’re driving. You’re also covered if the vehicle is stolen or damaged while in your custody.

It’s important that you read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to find the cover that's right for you.

Travel Insurance cover for skiing and snowboarding in Japan

Heading to the Japanese Alps to ski or snowboard? AllClear provides a winter-sports add-on which can cover the replacement or repair of your personally owned or hired ski equipment if lost, stolen or damaged during your trip.

We can also cover the cost of hiring replacement skis if your ski equipment is delayed in reaching you on your outward trip for at least 12 hours.

Has a lack of snow caused the resort you’ve booked to close? We can cover the costs you have to pay to reach another resort. If there is no other resort available, we can provide cover for each full day you are unable to ski if your resort stays closed.

Cover for medical emergency expenses in Japan

With AllClear, you can get cover for your hospital bills and other medical costs while you’re in Japan. This includes necessary treatment for your declared pre-existing medical conditions.

Japan does not have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia. If anything happens on your holiday, a travel insurance policy is often the only available help for medical and hospital expenses.

Using Japan's medical facilities can be very expensive for Australian travellers, especially if it needs multiple days in a hospital.

With our comprehensive cover, you can travel across Japan without stressing about hospital bills. We’ll also help cover repatriation and evacuation costs if you need to be brought back home.

We also offer a 24/7 overseas emergency medical helpline open to help you find the right care at any time.

Travel safety tips for Japan

Japan is an enchanting and safe destination, but it’s still a good idea to follow a few safety tips while you’re there:

  • Natural disasters: Japan is vulnerable to natural disasters due to its unique location and climate. In an emergency, follow the advice of local authorities and emergency signage. Follow local media updates during a typhoon to locate the nearest shelter. If you’re in a coastal region, go to higher ground as soon as possible after a major earthquake.
  • Outdoor and skiing safety: While adrenaline-pumping activities like snowboarding and skiing can make your holiday special, they also carry safety concerns. Be sure you’ve taken all the necessary precautions when skiing and abide by the terms of your travel insurance. Always stay within the marked trails and stay out of closed areas.
  • Radiation restricted zones: There are restricted areas within a 20km radius of the Fukushima Daiichi plant due to radiation. Be sure to obey restrictions and legal authorities in these areas. Radiation levels in most parts of Japan are otherwise normal, including major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto.
  • Tourist scams and thefts: As a major tourist destination, thefts and scams can happen across Japan. You should also be alert to other petty crimes like pickpocketing. Look up common tourist scams ahead of time. Ensure you stay safe in bars and entertainment areas in major cities like Tokyo or Osaka.

What to do before travelling to Japan

To make sure you’ve got everything you need while you’re in Japan, here are a few things to double-check before you leave:

  • Travel insurance: A quality travel insurance policy is key to helping you relax and enjoy your adventures across Japan. Ensure your policy supports the activities you want to try on your holiday.
  • Entry requirements: Most Australians don’t need a visa to visit Japan for more than 90 days. You will need to complete a Traveller Declaration Form to enter the country.
  • Medical advice: Be sure you’ve consulted with your health professional about any vaccinations you may need for Japan. You’ll also need to find out if any medications you're currently using can be brought into Japan.
  • Emergency contact information: Ensure you have the basic information you need for a safe trip. This includes the Australian Embassy’s contact information and emergency service numbers. In Japan, the police can be reached on 110, and ambulance services can be reached on 119.
  • Currency exchange: Japan is a predominantly cash-based society. Be sure you have enough yen on your person to prevent inconveniences and enjoy a smoother trip.

Top locations to visit in Japan

Here are some suggestions for destinations you just have to see while you’re in Japan:

  • Tokyo: Japan’s biggest city offers some of the most unique experiences in the country. With quality food and hidden gems around every corner, you’ll find an unforgettable experience somewhere in Tokyo.
  • Kyoto: The capital city of Japan for over 1000 years, today Kyoto is a fantastic place to experience the unmistakable culture of Japan and see the stunning aesthetics of historical buildings for yourself.
  • Osaka: Japan's second-largest city is just as exciting and interesting as anything you’ll find in Tokyo. Famous for its food culture, Osaka features delicacies like takoyaki, as well as fascinating local history.
  • Mount Fuji: While you’re visiting Japan, it’s well worth taking in the sight of the nation's sacred symbol while you're here. Be sure to respect local customs while you're here!
  • Nagano Prefecture: This hidden gem destination features beautiful mountains, hot springs and incredible ski fields. Nagano is famous as one of the best winter sports hubs in Japan, as well as vibrant festivals and hiking activities.
