If you are injured while engaging in a covered outdoor activity, you’ll be covered for your medical costs. Enjoy the best that Hong Kong has to offer, from hiking to scuba diving.

Get covered for medical emergency expenses in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the most unique destinations in the world, but going there does have a few risks you need to be prepared for. With AllClear, you can make sure you have cover for medical expenses incurred while abroad.

Hong Kong does not have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with the Australian Government (Source: Australian Government, accessed 5 Nov 2025). If you need treatment after a personal accident, Travel Insurance may be the only financial support you have.

Getting treatment in Hong Kong can become costly for visitors. Non-residents can be charged up to AUD $240 for the initial emergency consultation in a public hospital (Source: Hospital Authority, accessed 5 Nov 2025).

AllClear’s medical cover lets you enjoy your trip with less stress. If an incident does occur, you can rest easy knowing you have financial support. AllClear can also cover repatriation and evacuation costs to bring you back home.

In addition, you have access to a 24/7 emergency medical helpline you can use whenever you need to find the right medical care while travelling overseas.

Travel safety tips for Hong Kong

While Hong Kong is generally a safe destination, it never hurts to be more aware while you’re on holiday. Here are a few health and safety tips to keep in mind in Hong Kong:

  • Natural disasters: Hong Kong experiences typhoons and heavy rain. Make sure you monitor local media during a storm and follow the advice of local authorities. You should also know your hotel's evacuation plan and keep your passport in a safe and waterproof location.
  • Scams and pickpocket areas: Scammers and pickpockets are present in Hong Kong, most notably in tourist spots and other populated areas. “The criminals commonly loiter near moneychangers, inside banks, or even queue up with ordinary customers, so as to identify unaware victims who have just withdrawn large sums of money from the tellers.” (Source: Hong Kong Police Force, accessed 5 Nov 2025) Stay alert when in public areas and only draw money in safe locations. Keep a close eye on your personal belongings. For added safety, check the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre for the latest scam alerts.
  • Cyber threats: Using shared public Wi-Fi when travelling can carry risks. Buy your own mobile phone data and avoid using public networks where possible.

National Security Laws in Hong Kong

Since 2024, Hong Kong has fallen under the 2024 Safeguarding Law (Source: Human Rights Watch, accessed 5 Nov 2025). The law can be broadly interpreted and applied to activities that take place outside of Hong Kong. Australian citizens have been convicted and imprisoned under the law. Before travelling, be aware of:

  • Limited support: The Australian Government has essentially no ability to intervene in the Hong Kong judicial process.
  • Social media control: Due to laws in Hong Kong, you can face legal consequences for social media activity. This can include posts you’ve made before entering the country. If you have any concerns, consider getting legal advice before travelling to Hong Kong.
  • Avoid protests: Keep in mind that the Hong Kong government prohibits participating, filming or photographing any public demonstrations.
  • Strict drug control: Like other countries in the region, Hong Kong has strict drug control laws. Do not bring any illegal drugs into the country.

What to do before travelling to Hong Kong

Here are some steps you can take for a safe and enjoyable trip:

  • Travel Insurance: Purchasing Travel Insurance is an important step for a safer trip. Be sure you understand what your policy covers and follow all relevant conditions.
  • Smartraveller: Be sure to monitor the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website for updates on potential safety risks.
  • Consult your health professional: Before going to Hong Kong, consult with your health professional to see if you can travel with your medical conditions. You should also check if there are any vaccinations you need before you leave. You should also check if any medications you plan to take with you are illegal in Hong Kong.
  • Entry requirements: Australian citizens generally don’t need a visa to visit Hong Kong for under 90 days. However, entry and exit conditions can change on short notice. You will also need a passport that is valid for at least six months after you’ve left the country.
  • Emergency contacts: Make sure you know the proper number in Hong Kong for police and other emergency services, as well as the contact details for the Australian Embassy. In Hong Kong, police and other emergency services can be reached on 112 and 999.
  • Currency: While Hong Kong supports credit cards, market stalls or other destinations may still prefer cash. Be sure you have enough physical currency for your trip, and know the best way to draw more if you need.

Top locations to visit in Hong Kong

When you're visiting Hong Kong, there are some spots you don’t want to miss:

  • Stanley Market: Take a break from the bustling city centre to enjoy a beautiful market hidden in the mountains. The bus ride from the city alone is worth it for the dramatic mountainside and stunning beaches you’ll encounter on the way.
  • The Peak Tower: Stop by Hong Kong’s most iconic vantage points to see a sweeping panoramic view of the whole city and the surrounding harbours. The journey up to the tower on the Peak Tram is an experience of its own. It features beautiful views with great shopping and dining options.
  • Tian Tan Buddha: Take a day trip to Lantau Island to see one of the world's largest seated bronze Buddha statues. Be sure to visit the nearby Po Lin Monastery and Ngong Ping Village while you're in the area.
  • Kowloon: Experience a fascinating glimpse into Hong Kong's unique city by visiting Kowloon, once the home of the famous “walled city”. Today, you can see the Wong Ta Sin Temple, and visit over 4 different marketplaces.

What our customers say

Excellent service

“Our consultant was excellent. He made everything clear and took the time to understand our needs. It was nice to speak to an Australian who spoke clear English and was not located in an overseas call centre. He called back exactly on time after giving us time to talk about our cover.”
