Get covered for medical emergency expenses in Malaysia
AllClear offers financial protection against emergency medical treatment costs while you’re abroad. This helps you explore Malaysia with confidence.
Malaysia does not have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with the Australian government (Source: Australian Government, accessed 05 Nov 2025). If something happens and you need treatment while you’re abroad, a Travel Insurance policy may be the only financial help you will receive.
Medical treatment in Malaysia can become very costly for Australian visitors. Visiting a private hospital can cost up to $220 per night (Source: Thompson Hospitals, accessed 05 Nov 2025). If an injury forces you to spend multiple nights in the hospital, you could end up facing significant costs.
With AllClear’s comprehensive Travel Insurance, you can explore this beautiful country with less stress. We can also help cover the costs of evacuation and repatriation if it’s necessary.
You can use AllClear’s 24/7 emergency medical helpline at any time to help find the right care while you’re overseas.

Travel safety tips for Malaysia
Malaysia carries some different risks than some Australians are used to. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe on your trip.
- Natural disasters: In Malaysia, there is a risk of earthquakes and direct cyclone impacts. Other natural disasters, such as floods, landslides, storms, and heatwaves, may impact your trip. Be sure to monitor local news and follow the advice of local authorities in case of an emergency. You should also ensure you know your hotel's evacuation plan.
- Scams and petty crime: Malaysia is one of the safest locations in Southeast Asia, but the crime rate may be higher than Australian travellers are used to. Bag-snatching is a common type of theft that you should be aware of. When walking, hold any bags opposite to traffic and keep your belongings close to you, especially in public areas like shopping malls.
- Managing heat and humidity: You may experience intense heatwaves while in Malaysia. Check METMalaysia’s active map for warnings. If you are caught in a heatwave, avoid strenuous outdoor activities. You should also drink plenty of water and try to stay in air-conditioned environments as much as possible.

Understanding the law in Malaysia
Here are some specific laws and customs in Malaysia you should be aware of before you go:
- Carry your ID: Malaysian law requires that you carry a form of identification with you at all times, such as your passport. You will also need to carry electronic evidence of your visa entry if you entered via the autogate.
- Drug laws: Malaysia has strict drug laws. Do not bring illegal drugs into Malaysia.
- Respect local customs: Make sure to follow local customs for a smooth trip to Malaysia. You should dress modestly at religious sites and government offices. If you’re a Muslim, Sharia Law applies to you on your visit to Malaysia.

What to do before travelling to Malaysia
A safe and fun holiday you'll remember forever requires some preparation before you go. Here are a few things you should do before you leave:
- Travel Insurance: Purchasing Travel Insurance will help you have a safer trip. It will also help to reduce financial stress resulting from emergencies. Be sure you understand what your policy covers you for, and follow all relevant conditions.
- Smartraveller: Be sure you’ve thoroughly reviewed the Australian government’s Smartraveller advice on Malaysia before you head off. Check to see if there are any no-go areas and places with a higher risk of terror threats.
- Consult your health professional: Before leaving Australia, consult your health professional. Make sure you are in fit condition and have everything you need to travel. Get vaccination advice for recommended shots like Japanese Encephalitis. Discuss how to manage your pre-existing health conditions while on holiday. Find out if any medications of yours are illegal in Malaysia.
- Emergency contacts: You should also know how to contact the Australian Embassy. In Malaysia, emergency services are typically accessible on 999.

What do you need to do to enter Malaysia?
To enter Malaysia, you will need a valid Australian passport. You will also need to have completed a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before you arrive (Source: Malaysian Government, accessed 05 Nov 2025).
Typically, Australian citizens can get a 90-day tourism visa on arrival. However, entry and exit conditions can change on short notice.
You may encounter autogate facilities when you arrive. Manual counters are also available. To use the autogate, Australian travellers must have a passport that is still valid for 6 more months. You must have completed their MDAC at least 3 days before arriving.
