Get covered for medical emergency expenses in China
China is one of the most unique and unforgettable destinations in the world. To maximise the fun you can have on your journey, there are a few risks to travelling there that you should be insured against.
With AllClear, you can make sure you have cover for overseas medical expenses.
China does not have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with the Australian Government (Source: Australian Government, accessed 5 Nov 2025). If you need treatment after an incident, Travel Insurance may be the only financial support you have.
Getting treated in China can become costly for visitors. In a private hospital, consultation can cost up to AUD$1,282, depending on the hospital (Source: Expat Focus, accessed 5 Nov 2025). Without any assistance, your costs could add up significantly.
AllClear’s medical cover lets you enjoy your trip with less worry. If something does happen, you can rest easy knowing you have financial protection. AllClear will also cover repatriation costs if required.
AllClear also offers a 24/7 emergency medical helpline you can use whenever you need it, so you can find the right medical assistance while you’re abroad.

Travel safety tips for China
While China is generally safe for tourists, it never hurts to be aware while you’re travelling. Here are a few health and safety tips to keep in mind while you’re in China:
- Natural disaster risk: All provinces of China face some degree of natural disasters, including earthquakes, floods and forest fires. In case of a large-scale natural disaster, monitor your media and follow the advice of local authorities. You should also study your hotel's evacuation plan and keep your passport in a safe and waterproof location.
- Scammers and pickpockets: Scammers and pickpockets are present across China, especially in populated tourist areas in Shanghai and Beijing (Source: Australian Government - Smartraveller, accessed 5 Nov 2025). Keep a close eye on your personal belongings and avoid crowded areas.
- Cyber threats: Using shared public Wi-Fi when travelling can be potentially risky. Buy your own mobile phone data and avoid using public networks where possible. Keep in mind that you may not be able to access certain apps while in China.
- No-go zones: For maximum safety, do not travel in or near the border of Tibet or Xinjiang.
Local laws in China
China has some unique laws that Australians may not be familiar with. Before travelling, be aware of:
- Strict drug control: China has strict drug control laws with harsh penalties. These laws apply even to small quantities of cannabis.
- Always carry ID: Always ensure you have some form of identification with you. Authorities in China may ask you for it at any time.
- Social media control: In China, you can face legal consequences for social media activity. This can include posts you’ve made before entering the country. If you have any concerns, consider getting legal advice before heading on your holiday.
- Avoid protests: Keep in mind that the Chinese government prohibits participating, filming or photographing any public demonstrations.

What to do before travelling to China
A fun, safe trip requires proper preparation. Here are some steps for a better journey:
- Travel Insurance: Purchasing Travel Insurance is an important step for a safer trip. Be sure you understand what your policy covers, and follow all relevant conditions.
- Smartraveller: Make sure to monitor the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website for updates and crucial safety advice.
- Consult your health professional: Before going to China, check with your health professional to see if you can travel with your medical conditions, or if there are any vaccinations you need before you leave. You should also check to see if you have medications that are illegal in China.
- Entry requirements: Australian citizens generally don’t need a visa to visit China for 30 days, thanks to the visa waiver program. However, entry and exit conditions can change on short notice. You will also need a passport that is valid for at least six months after you’ve left the country.
- Emergency contacts: Make sure you know the proper number for police and other emergency services in China, as well as the contact details for the Australian Embassy. In China, police can be contacted on 110, fire services can be reached on 119, and ambulances can be reached on 120.
- Currency: While China supports credit cards, certain shops or destinations may still prefer cash, especially in remote areas. Make sure you have enough physical currency for your trip and know the best way to draw more if needed.
