Why is Travel Insurance important for Canada?
Travel Insurance provides financial cover for you while you’re on your Canadian holiday. This means you won’t have to worry about the cost of emergency medical treatment on your relaxing (or exhilarating) holiday.
Here are a few reasons you should consider Travel Insurance for your trip to Canada:
- Overseas emergency medical costs: While Canada has a high standard of healthcare, medical costs are expensive for travellers. With Travel Insurance, you have financial cover for medical assistance if you need treatment in Canada.
- Trip cancellations and delays: Unforeseen events may suddenly cancel or cause delays to your Canadian trip. With AllClear’s comprehensive Travel Insurance, you have cover for delays and cancellations, helping you sit back and enjoy your trip.
- Natural disasters and severe weather: Conditions such as extreme temperatures, heavy snow, freezing rain and forest fires are common in Canada. With Travel Insurance, you are covered for disruptions or cancellations caused by snowstorms, forest fires, heat haze or other events.
- Lost or stolen belongings: We’ll provide cover for certain personal belongings that are lost or stolen on your journey.
- Adventure activities: From hiking up Mount Temple to snowboarding in Sun Peaks, Canada is packed with outstanding outdoor adventures to enjoy. If you get injured while you’re exploring snow country, Travel Insurance can help to cover your overseas medical expenses.
This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.

What does AllClear's Canada Travel Insurance cover?
Our Canadian Travel Insurance covers a wide variety of expenses and unforeseen events that can happen on your trip. With our policies tailored towards seniors and people living with pre-existing medical conditions, you can enjoy your travels with greater peace of mind.
Here’s a summary of what our policies do and don’t cover:
What's covered?
Emergency medical expenses and repatriation: We’ll cover the cost of hospital expenses, tests, procedures and medications required to treat an illness or injury while you’re travelling in Canada. You’ll also be covered if a treatment requires medical evacuation.
You’ll be covered for delayed flights and cancellation fees if an unexpected event forces you to cancel your holiday before it begins.
We’ll cover costs if a medical emergency forces you to cut your trip short.
We’ll provide cover for extra costs that arise if your flight is delayed.
We’ll cover certain baggage and personal items against possible loss or theft during your trip.
You’ll be covered for legal costs you may incur while making claims for an incident that occurs during your trip.
Our policies have no upper age limit, allowing you to enjoy peace of mind, no matter your age.
What’s not covered?
For most claims, you won't be covered for your Travel Insurance excess (the first part of your claim).
You’ll be asked to select a specific region as your area of cover when you purchase Travel Insurance. Journeys outside of this region are not covered by your policy.
You won’t be covered if the claim relates to issues that you were aware of before buying your insurance or booking your trip.
If you haven’t declared a medical condition to us, we cannot provide cover for it.
Trip cancellations are not covered unless they meet your policy’s terms and conditions.
This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.

Travel safety tips for Canada
Canada is a friendly and safe destination, but it’s always a good idea to have a few safety tips in mind:
- Natural disasters: Canada is vulnerable to natural disasters due to weather conditions during the winter periods. If you are caught in an emergency, such as a snowstorm, avalanche or hurricane, follow the advice of local authorities and keep an eye on local media for further updates.
- Managing the weather: If you’re from a warmer part of Australia, Canada may present weather conditions you haven't previously experienced. Be sure to pack plenty of warm clothing before you leave, including gloves, scarves, hats or ear muffs.
- Scams and theft: Canada’s crime rate is similar to Australia’s. However, crime does occur, especially in larger cities. Petty crimes like theft and pickpocketing can occur in tourist areas and on public transport. Be sure to look after your belongings and hide any valuables from sight.
- Wildlife awareness: Certain areas of Canada have dangerous wildlife present, such as grizzly or polar bears, and moose. Get local advice before hiking or camping near dangerous animals.
Driving in the snow in Canada
Canada’s winter weather can cause freezing rain, heavy snowfall and other icy conditions that can affect road safety. If you are getting behind the wheel, be sure you are properly equipped with winter tyres and snow chains if necessary.
Know your route, avoid driving in extreme weather, and maintain a wide berth between you and other vehicles. If you identify black ice on your path, it’s best to stop and wait for it to melt whenever possible.
See the Canadian Government’s winter driving guide for more tips.

What to do before travelling to Canada
To make sure you have everything you need before you leave for Canada, here are a few details to double-check:
- Travel Insurance: A comprehensive Travel Insurance policy is crucial to helping you relax and enjoy your holiday in Canada with peace of mind. Make sure you have a policy that supports the activities you want to try on your adventure.
- Entry requirements: While Australian visitors generally don’t need a visa to enter Canada, you will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation before you can fly to Canada. You must also have your passport or equivalent travel document.
- Medical consultation: Be sure to consult with your health professional about any vaccinations or other treatments you may need in Canada. You should also check to make sure any medication you plan to take is currently legal in Canada.
- Emergency service information: It’s a good idea to keep relevant emergency numbers handy, including the Australian Embassy’s contact details. Emergency services in Canada can generally be contacted by 911.
- Currency exchange: If you are going on a ski trip or travelling to rural destinations, some places may not accept card payments. Having enough Canadian dollars available can make it easier to pay for daily expenses while travelling.

Top locations to visit in Canada
Having a good idea of where you want to go in Canada can make the difference between a good holiday and a great one. Here are some must-see destinations in the Great White North:

- Vancouver: This vibrant city offers a perfect blend of outdoor beauty with modern, urban sophistication. Experience the unique melting pot of Canadian culture at Stanley Park, or take a scenic drive along the Sea-to-Sky Highway.
- Niagara Falls: Be sure to stop by one of the most iconic natural wonders in the world while you're visiting Canada! Niagara Falls is famous for the breathtaking Horseshoe Falls and offers illuminated falls at night, botanic gardens, and nearby scenic hikes.
- Québec City: Québec City is a location out of time with strong historical French influences. The Historic District of Old Québec is one of Canada's most well-known UNESCO World Heritage Sites and embodies the city’s one-of-a-kind heritage and culture.
